In this solo episode – there have been more solo episodes recently, since you seem to like these the most – Jake shares a few ideas about a book he has been reading recently. He challenges you to read books and really study them. Reading is so much better than listening to podcasts or ebooks, because when you read a book, you focus on it and don’t do anything else. The book he is diving into today is Smarter, faster, better by Charles Duhigg . The author has had another best seller a few years back, called The Power of Habit.
“Anyone can learn to habitually construct mental models” – Charles Duhigg states that several researchers have reached this conclusion. If you focus on building stories about what is going on around you, you will be able to have control over where your attention goes. Jake argues that visualization is just a tool of building stories about what could potentially happen around you and that visualizing can help you have laser-focused attention.
People use visualization to walk through all the steps they need to go through and involve all their senses in the process. The cool thing is that we can all visualize, as it does not require special skills or pills. You already have this inside you and you need to take advantage of it.
If you are about to go through a situation you are nervous about or scared of, visualize it. It is better to be over-prepared for it than under-prepared. Once you focus, your attention will go there.
