In this episode, Jake shares the joy of his book being scheduled to be released in late October or early November – how’s that for a deadline? Oh, and did I mention that this episode was broadcast live on Facebook?
But now, let’s get to the serious part, where Jake depicts the main points in David Allen’s book Getting things done. His principles are brilliant and everybody can learn from them.
Principle #1: Capture everything .We all need a system for capturing things like shopping lists, to do lists, budgets. First off, you need to find your favorite way of capturing things: it may be pen and paper, or your phone or a voice recorder!. But you can’t choose your mind as your system for capturing things! Put it in a trusted system!
Principle #2: Find the next action. We all know where we want to get, but sometimes it is less obvious what the next step is to get you there. So you need to make sure you dig deep and know what that next action is.
Principle #3: The two-minute game. Anything that takes less than two minutes needs to be done right away! If you don’t do those easy, quick things, they will pile up and eventually take you much more than they would have taken if you did them in the first place! Knock it out of the park right away.
Principle #4: Inbox zero! Go into your inbox and clear everything out. Scrape things through, put important emails into folders, get things organized. A bulky email slows your computer down a lot. Clearing a crowded inbox might take a lot of time, but once you have a system in place and stick with it for 60 days – the average time it takes to instill a new habit – you will be good to go!
Principle #5: Imagine wild success. Dream about the end goal and in the process figure out the steps to get there. Stop thinking on what you don’t have, and start thinking about what you DO have to reach that wild success!
If you want to make productivity hacks a part of your life, you need to be committed to doing them and, as the military say, embrace the suck! Also, a great way of instilling these things in your life is to help someone else through a similar situation. The more you give, the more you grow!
