This week Jake is speaking with martial arts coach Rodney King about kicking limits out of your life.
Rodney grew up in an area of Johannesburg, South Africa, called the South Side, which is government housing similar to what is known as “the projects” in the United States. He grew up with violence around him constantly, so he had a lot of anxiety. When he got older, he got into martial arts, which helped him move past his anxieties and limitations.
Rodney now uses his own experiences in life and his knowledge of martial arts to help others work through their own limits. As Rodney tells us, control is an illusion. We can never have complete control of our lives or of every situation. but we can learn to deal with the imperfection and work in the moment as we move forward. We lose contact with the present moment by either holding onto the past or projecting into the future rather than concentrating on where we are now. Learn to accept where you are in your life in this moment without judgment about things that have already happened. It’s already happened and you can’t change it. You can only change what you do from this moment on.
Listen in as Rodney and Jake talk about what holds us back and how we can push ourselves toward taking risks. Discover the secret to task irrelevant cues and task relevant cues, and how they can help you in moving past your own limits.

Great episode with Rodney King! Really enjoyed the lessons from the mat, and really think people can benefit from what Rodney was saying about embodied intelligence.
Would have loved for the interview to go on a lot longer, and for there to be some more questions about the specifics of Rodney’s story and his martial arts training! Hope he will be a returning guest on OSR.
Very much enjoyed this interview. I have read Rodney’s book “Full Contact Living: Preparing You for the Martial Arts of Everyday Life” and have been fortunate enough to attend training with him. Anyone interested in mindfulness in action, performance and taking action moment by moment in their lives should definitely take the time to check out what he is doing.
Jon, Thanks for listing and the awesome comment. Rodney is awesome.
What an extremely interesting interview! You can really find some life changing advices there.
Thank you for that podcasts Jake. I would love to hear more from Rodney King.
I am truly enjoying your podcasts and find that they make an excellent reminder for me to stay on the path of my own journey.
However, before I go I just want to give you a wee bit of correction: Ted Turner is still alive and kicking! It’s just feels like he’s dead since he and Jane Fonda have split up and therefore the media’s no longer interested in him.
Keep up the great work! 🙂
Great interview 🙂
I’m a big fan of Rodney’s approach and have really felt its benefit over the years. Excellent summary of some of the key ideas!
