In this episode of the Operation Self Reset podcast, Jake is talking with Shana Norris, graphic designer and author.
Shana knew from a young age that she wanted to become an author one day, but her family encouraged her to have a backup plan. So she went to college and learned graphic design. She got a job with a newspaper company as a web designer and worked there for twelve years. During that time, she worked on her books and succeeded in getting a literary agent and publishing two young adult novels.
But just getting published doesn’t mean that everything will be rosy. Shana’s books weren’t bestsellers and her publisher decided not to take on any more books after the first two. Shana depended on her full-time job to pay her bills—until the day the company decided to lay off the entire web team. Shana didn’t let this bring her down. She decided to take control of her life and career by working as a freelance graphic designer and self-publishing a few of her books. She also helps Jake with Operation Self Reset each week by designing the graphics for the podcasts and writing the show notes.
Shana now works from home, still writing—she’s both writing for a publisher and continuing to self-publish—and doing freelance design work. Listen in to her advice on how to keep moving forward when life throws you curveballs and how to turn a bad situation into the life you’ve been looking for.
