In this episode of the Operation Self Reset podcast, Jake is talking with David Waknine, of the documentary One More Round.
Originally from Morocco, David was a Jewish boy who was treated as an outsider and bullied. When he moved to America, he found himself experiencing a similar situation, being an outsider in a new country and going through bullying again. He became a boxer at age eighteen, working with a trainer who inspired and motivated him to push himself. Boxing became something that gave David strength and confidence.
But David never felt that he had the confidence he should have had with the amount of press recognition he was getting. He felt out of place when the reporters were standing there waiting for him. He had a big fight scheduled at Madison Square Garden, but he never felt that he would be able to win. Everyone else had more confidence in him than David had in himself. He ended up losing the fight, and then David walked away from the sport. He had offers to come back, but his heart wasn’t in it.
After different changes in their lives, David and his trainer lost touch for a while. When his trainer contacted him again, it was to let him know that he had cancer. They began talking constantly again, and David’s trainer once again became his mentor. When his trainer passed away, David felt the urge to get back into the ring again after all this time. He faced a tough road to getting back into the ring after so long, but David was determined to honor his trainer’s memory and prove to himself that he could do this. The upcoming documentary One More Round is an inspiring film that follows his journey in and out of the ring.
