Episode 139: Five tips from Jim Rohn

In episode 139, Jake shares five tips he took from the personal development guru, Jim Rohn and also gives us three strategies people use when they learn from other people.

Jim Rohn had a fantastic rags-to-riches story that was a huge part of the message he spread out in the world as an author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker. He used many of the strategies shared by his mentor in his own message. Here are five mentor-moments that passed the test of time:

1.Let’s do this. The hardest thing to do is doing something by yourself.  But once you take a partner along with you in your journey, everything seems and becomes easier. It’s easy to cheat on yourself because it’s do hard to cheat on others ; that’s why it is so wise to have somebody you are accountable to as partner along the way.

2. The worst thing you can be is overcautious: sometimes it is very tough to live a life worth living if you are overcautious. Life is more than what you are currently doing and when you think big, when you ge the big picture perspective, you can be pulled out of that overcautious zone!

3. Work harder on yourself than on your job. Fit time in for yourself, time to listen to a podcast or an audio book, to read a book and really study it. If you work hard on your job, you will make a living, but if you work hard on yourself, you’ll make a fortune - a fortune which does not only refer to your financial life, but to the abundance in your life: better relationships, more fulfillment, happier days.

When it comes to your life, make sure you go with someone who goes through the same things as you are and embrace the suck: that’s what life is all about. We all go through happy moments and less happy moments, but the secret is to embrace all that happens to us and let it be easy!

4. Dream big! Recall your childhood memories and the things you dreamt to be when you grow up. And never feel too old to start something from scratch. In finding the next thing to focus on, Jake suggests using his road map that starts with writing down 101 goals: adventures, books to read or write, people to meet, things that scare you or obstacles you want to overcome! Once you do that, put a check mark next to the things that you really want to do. Then wait 2-3 days, and put another sign next to the ones you really want to do. After a few days, put other signs to the ones you really want to pursue! In the end, you will be left with the few goals you should focus on!

5. Never give up until…! We neeed to incorporate this word – until – more in our vocabulary. It can serve us well as a motivator, as something to look forward to.

Three ways to learn from other people

  • Learn from what you see. You need to pay attention all the time! Be present and pay attention to everything you do and see others doing.
  • Learn from what you hear. People have two ears and just one mouth for a good reason: to listen more than they talk. There are plenty of teachers all around us, and teachers are even those who are not paid to teach us. You can learn even from people who talk on the phone while commuting in the subway with you.
  • Read books written by valuable people! Instead of rubbing shoulders with the people you would want to meet, read their books: it’s easier, cheaper, less time consuming. There are billion of books out there for a reason.

Here’s what Jake said, in a nutshell:

  • Don’t try to do everything on your own, but get a companion on your journey.
  • Be bold and darring.
  • Work on yourself.
  • Remember your childhood dreams!
  • Never give up!
  • Put a timeframe on your goal
  • Learn from other people: through observing them, hearing them and reading their books
